Bushwhackers, Quantrill’s Raid, Lawrence Kansas, jayhawkers

William Quantrill and his horrible Missouri bushwhackers believed that slavery was the way to go.  In 1863, in order to try to stop Quantrill’s guerilla-style attacks, a Union General arrested and jailed many female relatives of the raiders in Kansas City, Mo. The jail building collapsed, killing and severally injuring most of the women. Some say the building’s collapse in Kansas City fueled Quantrill’s attack in beautiful Lawrence, Kan., but others claimed Quantrill planned the raid long before the collapse. On August 21, 1863, Quantrill and his men brutally murdered almost 200 men and boys who were “old enough to hold a pistol” in Lawrence, Kan., in name of the confederate flag and pro-slavery Missouri. However, this didn’t stop the perseverance and strength of the Kansas Jayhawkers.
