Harry S. Truman

Missouri’s one and only home-grown U.S. President Harry S. Truman didn’t even have a college degree – but that didn’t stop him from obtaining the most prestigious position in the United States. Truman, America’s 33rd president, was born in Lamar, Mo., and shortly thereafter moved to Independence, Mo. After graduating from Independence High School (now called William Chrisman High School), Truman worked various clerical jobs in Missouri. He even opened a haberdashery, or a small clothing and accessories shop, near 104 West 12th Street where the Hotel Phillips currently stands. He soon got his first job in the county court, and with the endorsement and support of the Pendergast Machine… the rest was history.
