Ed Asner

Best known for his role the hard-as-nails, but with a soft-side, television producer from The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Edward Asner (1929-) started out with a much more humble background. Born in an orthodox Jewish and Russian household in Kansas City, Mo., Asner went to Wyandotte High School, 2501 Minnesota Ave, and then the University of Chicago. After serving in the military after college, Asner went to the Big Apple and soon landed his role as Lou Grant in 1970.  After The Mary Tyler Show ran its course, Asner landed a spin-off show called Lou Grant in 1977 that lasted for about five years. Asner is also known for his work as a voice actor. His voice has been heard in a variety of cartoons such as Batman: The Animated Series (1992-1994) and Captain Planet and the Planeteers (1990-1995). His most famous voice role now would probably be his role in the critically acclaimed and beloved animated film called Up (2009) where he voiced the grumpy old man, Carl (who even looked like Asner!), who learned how to live a happy life after his balloon-house adventure to South America.
